Land of the lost tells the story of Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell), a paleontologist who works at the bar, after an interview with Matt Lauer who dropped his good name. A doctoral student Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel) said that the controversial Rick's theory of time travel and paleontology inspired him. Holly showed him a fossil cigarette lighter that belonged to Rick. They then rushed to where they found the fossil by bringing a handicraft shop owner, will stanton (danny mcbride). There, they open the gates to the past and save creatures like primates named cha-ka. Cha-ka (jorma taccone) then becomes their travel companion.
The group spent the night in the cave, after surviving the pursuit of tyrannosaurus, which they named "grumpy". Marshall then gets a telepathic message to help someone trapped in the rubble. They then met a lizard man named Sleestak (Douglas Tait) before meeting someone who gave him a telepathic message, Enik (John Boylan). Enik explained that evil creatures called zarn (leonard nimoy) would master the earth with sleestak, but it could prevent this if Marshall gave his time cruiser.
The film land of the lost continued when they arrived in the desert, where many things from various times appeared there. There, they met several dinosaurs who soon started fighting with grumpy. One of the dinosaurs then swallowed a time-cruiser which was later killed by Marshall using nitrogen gas. The tool is then stolen by the pteranodon and placed in the nest. The tool turned out to be used to sleep pteranodon children.
Marshall, will and cha-ka celebrate their success, while holly investigates zarn. Then they realized that actually, it was the one who wanted to dominate the world, but was captured by sleestaks and taken to the library of skulls to get a trial. The Marshall group then worked together to capture the energy and defeat the sleestalk forces. Then they return to the world, except for Will, who decides to stay in order to get a better life and also to keep him from running away to the human world.
The film Land of the Lost ended when the newspaper today gave rise to headlines with the title "Matt Lauer Can Suck It" due to dinosaur eggs brought by Holly. The egg hatched and the baby appeared.
